The Singular World Fantasy Football League
was
founded in 1999 by Jon Schroden
at Cornell University. Originally named
the "Small World Fantasy Football League," it
underwent a name change in September, 2000,
due to copyright conflicts.
Initially founded as a means to further
the enjoyment of each week's NFL games and
to bolster comraderie amongst graduate
students, it has emerged as the premiere means
of talking dump to, and exhibiting one's
superiority over, one's friends and lab-mates.
1999-2000
Season
The first year of the SWFFL was quite
unpredictable,
following closely the unstable
nature of the NFL that year. Indeed,
the season saw many surprises, including the
second-place divisional finish of the
Slutsville
Raging Whores, despite having more
points scored against than for. The
season
was plagued by injuries, as teams like
Backdoor No Babies will attest; at least half
the first-round draft picks missed all,
or a significant portion of, the regular
season.
Even the post-season did not fail to
live up to the oddity of this year, as both
number-one seeds lost in the first round,
leaving the door open for number-four seeds
Minnesota Mulva and Bristol Blitzkrieg
to steal first and third place, respectively.
Season Results:
Ale Division Champion - East Groton
Glockenspiels
Lager Division Champion - Cheyenne Sheepshaggers
League Third Place - Bristol Blitzkrieg
League Second Place - Mushroom Village Smurfs
Leage Champions - Minnesota Mulva
2000-2001
Season
This year witnessed a new look for the
SWFFL.
The league was filled with
activity in the off-season, as two teams
changed
ownership, and two others
migrated to new locations. Once the
season
began however, one thing was clear: this
was definitely the year of the running back,
with the league's best runners
proving to one and all how pivotal that
position
is in determining a winner.
Unfortunately, the season was again plagued
with injuries, to which the lowly
Mulva will only too painfully testify.
The trend of upsets also carried over
from the first season, as once again neither
division winner (both repeats from last year)
could make it to the World Bowl; both number
three seeds stole the show instead. In the end,
the Slutsville Raging Whores proved to be much,
setting a new single-game
and single-season scoring record, en route
to their first SWFFL Championship.
Season Results:
Ale Division Champion - West Lansing Lederhosen
Lager Division Champion - Beaver Lick Cunning
Linguists
League Third Place - West Lansing Lederhosen
League Second Place - Bristol Blitzkrieg
League Champions - Slutsville Raging Whores
2001-2002
Season
The SWFFL had another great season, complete
with many surprises. The
offseason again saw some changes in the
league's
lineup of teams, including
the addition of a Chinese franchise.
Injuries fortunately did not play a
dominating role for many teams, allowing for
some exciting matchups in the
playoffs. The perennially tough
Blitzkrieg
made a good run at the championship,
but in the end the resurgent Mulva proved to
be too much for them, winning their
second SWFFL championship in three years.
Season Results:
Ale Division Champion - Bristol Blitzkrieg
Lager Division Champion - South Park Cows
League Third Place - Sheboygan Fightin' Billy
Schroeders
League Second Place - Bristol Blitzkrieg
League Champions - Minnesota Mulva
2002-2003
Season
This year was a surprising one for the SWFFL
in that the majority of the
players selected in the first two rounds of
the draft managed to escape
catastrophic injury during the season.
This, of course, made many owners
quite happy, especially those who had drafted
wisely. This was also the first
year that a non-Cornell Chemistry Grad student
was allowed to own a team,
as a result of the SWFFL's committment to
diversity
(er, yeah). The fourth
SWFFL Bowl saw the upstart Alpha Grabba Thi
taking on the dynasty
Slutsville Raging Whores. In the end,
experience proved to be too much for the
Thi to overcome, and the Raging Whores took
home their second SWFFL
championship.
Season Results:
Ale Division Champion - Calgary Flamers
Lager Division Champion - Slutsville Raging
Whores
League Third Place - Duluth East Eunuchs
League Second Place - Alpha Grabbe Thi
League Champions - Slutsville Raging Whores
2003-2004
Season
This year in the SWFFL
witnessed history made on several fronts. Many records were
broken, both good and
bad. A new single-game scoring mark was set by both a team
and a player, and a new
single-game low-scoring record was established. The SWFFL
welcomed the return of
the T. Square Necromancers, in addition to a new franchise
in Poughkeepsie.
The SWFFL also branched out into other facets of the internet,
with the establishment of
a chat page for analysis and smack talk. The regular season
was filled
with ups and downs for
most teams, and in the final week of the regular season, the
Ale Division playoff
scenarios were perhaps the most interesting we have seen to date.
In the end, though, the
Duluth East Eunuchs proved to be the most complete, and
most consistent, team in
the league, and these traits earned them a win in SWFFL Bowl V.
